Improved IoT capabilities for Agriculture applications

Abstract: This talk will propose 2 new techniques to improve IoT for agriculture, first about its communication range on wide and hardly covered areas and then about its power supply that is critical on remote fields.

About the coverage, an object must be within communication range of a gateway. In 2020, it is estimated that 25% of the earth’s surface is connectable to the Internet. In the 75% of the land surface not connected to the Internet are many farms. One solution to connect the entire surface of the earth is to use a constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. We will present the issues related to the implementation of LEO satellite IoT communications and to provide a comparative analysis of the techniques that can be used.

About the power supply, an object regularly sends raw data. The radiofrequency transceiver is the building block that consumes the most. We propose to dramatically reduce the power consumption by sending data less often by processing it into the object. For example, instead of sending very little information every minute or hour, we send a little bit more every hour or day. We determine the right trade-off between precision and volume of data with an algorithm applied to temperature data. The power consumption and the accuracy of temperature data conclude on the efficiency of our technique for environmental data that can be applied to others in agriculture and thus, reduce the over whole power consumption and extend every object’s operational lifetime, especially in isolated areas.
Dr. Guillaume Ferré graduated in electronic and telecommunication engineering (ENSIL) at the University of Limoges (France) in 2003 and received the Ph.D. degree in 2006 from the Limoges University of Technology in the field of digital communications and signal processing. From 2006 to 2008 he was postdoctoral researcher at the Limoges XLIM laboratory and then at the IMS laboratory in Bordeaux. Since 2008 he is associate professor at ENSEIRB-MATMECA, an engineering school of Bordeaux INP. After several administrative responsibilities in the Telecommunications Department of ENSEIRB-MATMECA, Guillaume Ferré is now the Director of Industrial Relations at ENSEIRB-MATMECA. He carries out his research activities within the IMS laboratory in the «signal and image» team. These fields of research concern the circuits and systems for digital communications, it includes:
– Signal processing and digital communications for 5G and IoT
– Digital enhancement for wideband power amplifiers and time interleaved analog to digital converters.

Guillaume Ferré is the author of more than a hundred papers in international conferences. He is also author of 7 patents. He currently supervises 5 PhD students with a significant part of industrial research activities. He is member of several Technical Program Committees (ICC, Globecom, ICT, ICECS, etc.). In 2019, he received as author the Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (IEEE PIMRC 2019), Track 4, entitled «An Enhanced LoRa-Like Receiver for the Simultaneous Reception of Two Interfering Signals»
In the IMS laboratory he holds the position of Vice-President of the Scientific Council. He is the Principal Investigator (PI) of many national and international projects, at the local level he is responsible for two research activities related to IoT, including one to investigate on the smart campus.
